The Malaysian CropLife & Public Health Association (MCPA) and the Malaysian Plant Protection Society (MAPPS) has successfully organized the Seminar on Weed Resistance Management in Oil Palm Plantations, sponsored by Syngenta AG held on the 26 November 2009 at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Serdang.
There are approximately 140 participants attended this seminar . the range of participants come from governments agency, non-governmental associations, plantations, plant sciences industry, universities' students etc. The keynote speakers of this seminar include Prof Stephen Powles (University of Western Australia) presented on the title "Sustainability Through Diversity – What the Oil Palm Industry Can Learn from the World on Resistance" and Dr Chuah Tse Seng (Universiti Malaysia, Terengganu) to present the paper on "Status on Weed Resistance in Plantation Crops in Malaysia".
The paper on "Preliminary Findings of Potentially Resistance Goosegrass (Eleusine indica (L) Gaertn) to Glufosinate" presented by En Adam Jalaludin. the last paper was presented by My Jeremy Ngim (Syngenta Criop Protection Sdn Bhd) on "Practical Approaches to Manage Herbicide-resistant weeds, with Particular Reference to Eleusine indica".
This seminar has increased the awareness and understanding of stakeholders on the need to develop strategies to prevent or delay the development of resistance in weeds. The plant science industry views weed resistance as an extremely serious threat and its containment would need the resources and cooperation of all stakeholders. Effective weed resistance management is essential especially in the oil palm plantations which is a major consumer of herbicides in Malaysia.
